infield fly rule

infield fly rule

the rule that a batter who hits an infield fly, as called by the umpire, is automatically out if there are less than two outs and runners are on first and second base, or the bases are loaded; the rule is provided so an infielder cannot drop the ball on purpose and create a double play.
